Business Goal Setting Made Easy - 5 Tips from April Whiston

1 Dream Big

Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the magic when you’re in the thick of the daily grind. Try to remember all the reasons you chose to start your business in the first place. Now write down everything you want to achieve, from the small to the completely unrealistic. What does success look like to you? While you’ll ultimately need to break down your goals into manageable steps, having a big picture to work towards will encourage you to stay motivated and focused.

2 Stay SMART

It’s not a new concept, but it’s a great one. This easy-to-remember acronym encourages you to set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. By following this tried and true method, your goals will become far more achievable.

3 Avoid perfection and stay flexible

So many people get caught up in the need to do everything perfectly every step of the way. While I’m not advocating doing a sloppy job, you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you keep moving forward and work through any problems along the way. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and no one achieves great success by waiting for ‘just the right time’. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from progress. It’s also important to realise that things don’t always go according to plan. Avoid being too rigid and become a master of changing direction without losing momentum.

4 Find your tribe

Running a business can be lonely. Surround yourself with an encouraging support network that will help keep you accountable and motivated. Don’t hold back from seeking advice from those who’ve been there and done that. People understand the importance of having a great accountant to take care of your finances. Enlisting the help of a great business coach or mentor can be equally important when it comes to understanding and achieving business growth and success.

5 Believe in yourself

You can’t expect anyone to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself. You can set all the goals in the world, but if you lack confidence in your ability to achieve them then you’re fighting an uphill battle. Go back to the magic of the big picture. Engage with your tribe. Stay positive. Do whatever it takes to find that inner conviction and trust in yourself to be the success you dream of becoming.

And my bonus tip: Don’t forget to celebrate your success along the way. Acknowledgment of even the small victories will help you to appreciate all you are achieving and motivate you to keep ticking and kicking goals.
